Wednesday 21st April: This morning I woke to find swipper looking at me, both his eyes are open, the others seem more reluctant to open their eyes, I did see a little flash on blue from the corner of Swippers eye last night and thought Oh Dear, a blue eye! (great great granny Liffey had a blue eye that she inherited from her grandfather Canasta Replay and every now and again we get a throw back) once you have know and loved a dog with odd eyes you find it an ensdearing trait but to others it can be off putting. Anyway Panic over, both Swippers eyes are blue! No, its ok, all pups are born with blue eyes and then they change colour but Blue eyed puppies have a distinct florescent blue. Just have to wait to see the other pups eyes opening. I also noted that their ears are starting to relax and so they should soon be hearing as well as seeing. The development is now so rapid each day, as pups do new things.
The pups are now walking around in their dinosaur walk, and often lose their balance and fall over or tumble and roll over, they love sleeping on their backs with their legs in the air! They are also now barking like a ferbie (the toys back in the 90's) its a king of growl that wobbles and sounds nothing like their seagull cries that they have done since birth.
Another First, maybe will not excite many of you, LOL is that the pups are now starting to poo and wee with out mum or the grannies help, but they make such a drama out of it, circling several times whilst trying to get comfortable, the whelping box and day bad is still pristine thought, as mum and the grannies still clean up (in the wild they would not want any other predators knowing that their was a young litter around as they would be vulnerable so at this stage, cleaning up evidence of puppies is imperative from the adult females, Sadly once the pups are started to be weaned Mum gives up the cleaning Job and I will have to become busy with the mop, bucket and news papers!).
Tuesday 20th April: Well I am no longer weighting the puppies daily but I did weight them at ten days and they now have all doubled their birth weight and more. When I pick the puppies are for a cuddle they snuggle and snuffle and will lick your hand or face, this is the start of them playing and interacting. I always cuddle my pups from birth and often whilst having a cup of coffee or reading the paper I will get a pup, and snuggle it round my neck. Having had a granddaughter in special baby care, Its was encouraged to Kangaroo care, to help baby bond with humans, we would slip baby and all the wire down our blouses so that baby could have skin to skin contact, and its something I have done with my puppies every since. I am sure its one reason why my dogs are just so people oriented and wonderful heel work dogs, they just love human contact.
